I ordered a #YubiKey for myself. I was originally going to get a #NitroKey as I much prefer their open source approach. Always support your local KMUs! (small businesses)
However, I really want to be able to unlock my #KeePass database on both #Linux and #Android with it.
The NitroKey 3 supports the proprietary YubiKey challenge-response protocol, but neither #KeePassDX + #ykDroid nor #KeePass2Android work with NitroKeys. (#KeePassXC on desktop does, though!)
What a mess this is…

Apple to GNU/Linux Journal - GNU Emacs
"Back in late May and early June I began to give GNU Emacs a try. I’d opened it once or twice before only to quit it after a few minutes. Why bother when there are so many other text editors to choose from? The first thing I noticed about GNU Emacs was that it used different keybindings from those that have become fairly standard across most text editors. So, right off, that was a...

TIL, wget2 is the successor of GNU Wget with much faster download speed due to usage of parallel connections and other such stuff. You can install wget using APT or DNF or package manager of your choice. But they have a web page too https://gitlab.com/gnuwget/wget2
I spent a while updating a server today. It had uptime of almost 1000 days!
I installed the latest and greatest GPU driver, from v11 to v13, only to be told that the code doesn't run on the latest. Can you please revert to v12.8 instead?

For a reason I don't understand yet, if I install Discord (right from the Arch repo), Plasma's app launcher will just ignore the mere existence of the discord.desktop file inside both /usr/share/applications
and ~/.local/share/applications
and the app will never show up inside any of the applications categories.
(But Discord will definitely show up if you search it, just doing right click on it to try to tweak the launcher will just open the menu editor in a blank state as the app will not see the corresponding .desktop file)
The workaround was to copy the .desktop file from /usr to the home, and rename the desktop file from discord.desktop
to discord_return.desktop
(or anything else) and, hop, problem solved.
Renaming it back from discord_return.desktop
to discord.desktop
will make it disappear again. 🤡
Why? I have no clue, but I would sure like to understand the underlying kekaku
Hello people! I've been on the Fediverse for couple of years now, so here's my re-#introduction
I'm Ari, better known by my tag APZ and this is my #pinball repair, #arcade and #retrogaming account. I mostly post about playing and repairing pinball machines, but I also work on #retrocomputing with all the classics.
An IT guy by day, I moonlight as a pinball arcade owner here in #finland with my partner @quester. This is purely a hobby of mine, I do this to keep my sanity and to keep pinball alive for the next generations of players. At the moment I own a bit over 30 pinball machines from 70s to 2020s.
A lot of what I do involves #electronics, #CAD for now obsolete parts and #3dprinting and tabletop #cnc to recreate them.
I love to #travel, usually to meet like-minded arcade collectors. I have a strong preference to #repair stuff instead of throwing it away. I'm a #linux user since mid-90s, having been part of #foss movement most of my life. I also edit arcade related videos.

Time to thin the library of software engineering books that I no longer need or, in the case of the C++ ones, no longer (and never did) bring me joy. I doubt any charity shop will take these and I can’t just put them in recycling. If you would like any of these for the cost of postage (which for some will be sizeable), DM me. Dear friends of the BSD Cafe,
This idea has been in my mind since the very beginning of this adventure, almost two years ago. Over time, several people have suggested it. But until recently, I felt the timing just wasn’t right - for many reasons. Today, I believe it finally is.
So I’m happy to announce a new service:
The BSD Cafe Journal - https://journal.bsd.cafe
At first, I thought I’d use BSSG for it (I even added multi-author support with this in mind), but in the end, it didn’t feel like the right tool for the job.
The idea is to create a multi-author space, with content published on a fairly regular basis. A reference point for news, updates, tutorials, technical articles - a place to inform and connect.
Just like people in Italy used to stop by cafes to read the newspaper and chat about the day’s news, the BSD Cafe Journal aims to be a space for reading, sharing, and staying informed - all in the spirit of the BSD Cafe.
What it’s not:
It’s not here to replace personal blogs, or excellent newsletters like @vermaden ’s. And it’s not an aggregator.
What it is:
A place where authors can write original content, share links to posts on their own blogs or elsewhere, publish guides, offer insights, or dive into technical explanations.
The guiding principles are the same as always: positivity, constructive discussion, promoting BSDs and open source in general. No hype (sharing a cool new service is fine, posting non-stop about the latest trend is not), no drama, no politics. The goal is to bring people together, not divide them. To inform, not inflame.
Respect, tolerance, and inclusivity are key. Everyone should feel welcome reading the BSD Cafe Journal - never judged, offended, or excluded.
The platform I’ve chosen is WordPress, for several reasons: it’s portable (runs well on all BSDs), has great built-in role management (contributors, authors, etc.), and - last but not least - supports ActivityPub.
This means every author will have their own identity in the Fediverse (like: @stefano ) and can be followed directly, and it’ll also be possible to follow the whole Journal.
Original and educational content is encouraged, but it’s also perfectly fine to link to existing articles elsewhere. Personally, I’ll link my technical posts from ITNotes whenever I publish them there.
The goal is simple: a news-oriented site, rich in content, ad-free, respectful of privacy - all under the BSD Cafe umbrella.
Content coordination will happen in a dedicated Matrix room for authors. There’ll also be a public room for discussing ideas, giving feedback, and sharing suggestions.
Of course, I can’t do this alone. A journal with no content is just an empty shell.
So here’s my call for action:
Who’s ready to lend a hand? If you enjoy writing, explaining, sharing your knowledge - the Journal is waiting for you.

@lispi314 good question.
After all physical device <=> physical volume partution <=> logical volume groups (w/ RAID) <=> filesystems were used in classic #Linux-RAID transparently to each other.
But yeah, you are correct in that an integrity checkibg module was overdue...

You know, I gave #emacs devs shit a few days back for not putting screenshots of their packages working on their git repos. But it's not an emacs problem. For some silly reason, a lot of FOSS devs refuse to put an image of their app on their repo. It is especially egregious when it's a GUI app or a color scheme. #linux #foss

Various desktop Linux tips for newcomers
It's weekend, you might be visiting friends or relatives, and perhaps some of them are curious about switching away from Windows or macOS to Linux. There's countless guides out there about this very topic, but to help you along a bit and cut through the avalanche of "AI" and SEO slop, here's a true beginners' guide to desktop Linux written by KDE developer

Started building my entire infrastructure monitoring solution from scratch!
- Powered by FreeBSD!
- Using Jails and seperation of duty:
- One Jail running Grafana and Prometheus
- One Jail running Netbird Wireguard to connect my infra securely
- One Jail running Nginx and Certbot
All ZFS based for backup / snapshots and rollback options.
Routed and NAT'ed via a seperate deficated pf jail.
All working fine, I get first metrics and can start slowly improve from here.
Todo:
- Alerts via AlertManager
- Log-Ingestion via promtail
- Log analysis with Grafana Loki
- Adding remaining servers via WireGuard Mesh VPN
- Adding another Jail for Uptime-Kuma

Dear #BSD / #Anti_SystemD peeps,
Please make friends with #Linux-only, #Systemd fans.
#X114EVR peeps, please make friends with #Wayland fans.
The only way the community at large moves forward is to keep conflict within the domain of friendship. That way we can hold our differences, and learn to synthesize the disagreements.
And please, please don't assume that someone is your ally just because they agree with you on one technical point. I don't have a problem with X11 being maintained until the end of time, I just don't want it to be led by someone with really horrible/destructive politics.
It's not #CancelCulture, it's mercy. I would like to see a destructive ideology "canceled," people are never my enemy.
Edit: minor re-phrasing of last paragraph
